Description
Soviet Medal for Liberation of Warsaw in WW2 with a 1947 Award Certificate. Both the medal and document are GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL Soviet issue from 1940s, not a reproduction.
The medal is made in brass and measures 32.2 mm wide. The front has Russian inscription “For the Liberation of Warsaw”. On the reverse is the date 17 January 1945 when the city was taken by the Red Army in the initial phase of the massive Vistula – Oder offensive. This particular medal is so-called Variation 2 characterized by a U-shaped eyelet which is struck together with the medal.
The medal is in SUPERB condition, especially for an Original WW2 soldier’s award. The original fire gilt finish is extremely well preserved and bright showing only very light toning, mostly on the reverse, and a couple of tiny blemishes that are almost unnoticeable. The medal is almost completely free of visible wear, bumps or the usual scratches, has just some tiny dings to the edge. The details of the lettering and artwork are perfect and beautifully crisp on both sides. The medal comes on an ORIGINAL suspension in brass with a perfectly clean new ribbon.
The award certificate is of booklet format, measuring 3" x 4 ¼ " when closed. The inside pages show the depiction of the Medal, certificate serial number (A 448461), and hand-written rank and name of the award recipient: Private Leonid Petrovich Boyko. Also shows hand signature of a lieutenant colonel, the military commissar of the Sverdlovskiy District in the city of Vinnitsa (Ukraine), as well as ink stamp of the military commissariat. Note that vast majority of the “liberation” and “capture” campaign medals were issued long after the war, when their recipients were no longer on active duty, so it is not very common to see the rank of the recipient in a document such as this one.
Just like the medal, the document is in OUTSTANDING CONDITION. It has just a couple of very faint, barely noticeable marks and age toning on the cover, but is otherwise perfect: free of the usual soiling, tears, wrinkles or water stains. The stamp and writing are very clear, completely legible.
Like the other Soviet campaign medals, the Medal for the Liberation of Warsaw was issued exclusively to surviving troops who had directly participated in the battle - in this case, the servicemen of several armies of the 1st Belorussian Front [army group] and the Wojsko Polskie [Polish troops under Soviet control]. There is strong evidence that the Polish capital could have been easily taken in late 1944, but Stalin decided to wait things out and allow the Germans to crush the Polish rebellion in the city (thus getting rid of pro-western patriots and making the future job of NKVD much easier).
This Liberation of Warsaw Medal and Document are a great piece of history and can be a nice, meaningful addition to any WW2 medal collection!
