It was released in the U.S. on September 20, 1989 and was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for Marlon Brando. The film tells the story of a white middle class South African suburbanite (Sutherland) with no interest in politics who agrees to help his black gardener (Mokae) find his jailed son. His investigation opens his eyes to the horrors committed by the secret police and turns him into a target. Colin Welland is best known for his films Chariots of Fire (1981) - for which he won an Oscar, Yanks (1979) with Richard Gere, and Twice in a Lifetime (1985) with Gene Hackman and Ann-Margret.
