ANTIQUE VICTORIAN ENGLISH CUT STEEL LONG DROP EARRINGS c1880

Description

Cut steel jewellery was popular from the 18th century on, designed to catch the light like the facets of a rose-cut diamond. It has a certain look all its own though, a muted, cold look with soft facets and metallic reflections flashing in every direction - a unique and sought-after character. The steel is cut, shaped, faceted and each facet polished then the roundel is riveted onto the frame alongside its neighbours.
These wonderful earrings date from the mid-Victorian period and are in unusually fine condition, having all their rivets and their ear wires too. They're 4-section long drop earrings for pierced ears and reach a total drop of just shy of 3 inches. Intriguing historical earrings that are great talking points as well as beautiful and wearable jewellery!
They date from around 1860/70 and are in excellent, fully wearable condition, with light ageing but no loss or damage. Together they weigh 7.5 grams.
